Review the engineering workflow
Ask what input data is required, who owns mechanical and controls design, how calculations and component selections are reviewed, and which drawings are submitted for approval. Strong suppliers expose assumptions instead of hiding them.
Check how product samples, layouts, cycle models, risk information, interfaces, and acceptance criteria enter the design. A quotation with no technical questions may leave important scope undefined.
Examine build quality and test discipline
